Montréal, July 14, 2025 – Two members of the Québec team, Thomas Grenier (Thetford) and Shinyao Zhang (Rivermead), took top honours this weekend at the Boys’ and Girls’ Provincial Junior Championship, held Thursday through Sunday at Les Boisés de Joly Golf Club.

Grenier showed impressive consistency throughout the four rounds of the tournament, starting the event with two consecutive rounds of -4 (68) before following up with a -5 (67) on Saturday.

He then sealed his victory with a final round of -1 (71), bringing his cumulative score to -14. This triumph will allow him to represent Québec at the Canadian Junior Boys Championship, which will take place August 12-15 at the Gowan Brae Golf & Country Club in Bathurst, New Brunswick.

“I'm really happy to have won the Provincial Junior Championship. I've been in contention in the final rounds of a few tournaments, but I couldn't finish strong enough to win. This week, I played really well all four days and managed to maintain a good lead going into the final round,” said Grenier, adding that he is very confident heading into the national championship.

Just behind Grenier, Alexis Rouleau (Québec team/Centre de golf Lanaudière) held his own against the winner for much of the championship. He finished second overall in the competition with a score of -10 and, as a result, took first place in the junior division. Rouleau will also represent Québec at the national championship.

“It's a lot of emotions! This is the first time I've managed to shoot -10 over four days, and I'm really proud of myself. There was a lot of pressure being in the first group. I want to have fun at the Canadian Championship,” said Rouleau.

In the overall standings, Rouleau finished one stroke ahead of Hogan Blais (Camelot Golf & Country Club) who took third place at -9.

Charly Pinel (Bellechasse) will join Grenier and Rouleau to represent Québec in the inter-provincial team competition which is composed of the first two rounds of the Canadian Junior Boys Championship.

In the girls' division, Shinyao Zhang also showed great consistency throughout the four rounds of the provincial event, carding three rounds of +3 (75) and shooting par (72) in the third round on Saturday to claim a solo lead.

Like her male counterparts, Zhang will represent the province in the team competition which is composed of the first two rounds of the Canadian Junior Girls Championship, to be held at the Sainte-Marie Golf Club from August 13 to 16.

“I am really proud to win this tournament, especially since it is my last year as a junior. Golf Québec has helped me a lot over the past few years, and I am happy to be able to represent the province at the Canadian Championship. I am quite optimistic about the future,” said Shinyao Zhang.

Léonie Tavares (St-Raphaël) gave herself an early birthday present on Sunday by finishing first in the junior category with a total score of +12. The 15-year-old, who is celebrating her birthday today, carded a -1 (71) in the third round, which allowed her to finish second in the overall competition.

“I'm proud of my game. I stayed calm even when I was going through tough times. I want to keep working hard, especially on my tee shots. I'm hopeful for the rest of the season!” concluded Léonie Tavares, who will be competing in the Canada Games in the coming weeks. She will also be at Sainte-Marie for the individual competition of the national championship.

Alexandra Botsis (Québec team/Rosemère Fontainebleau) rounded out the top three in the provincial girls’ competition with a total of +15. She will join Zhang in representing Québec in the inter-provincial team competition. Sofia De Zordo (Québec team/Balmoral) will complete the trio in the Canadian event.
