André Maltais recounts that, during his years as a pro at the Club Laval-sur-le-Lac, he sold his first set of golf clubs to the legendary hockey player and that he was slow at cashing the cheque.
Was it to keep an autograph? Perhaps. But it was mostly because André wasn't convinced that his famous client had the golf bug.
Guy Lafleur has always been immensely generous with his time, serving as Honorary Chairman for numerous charitable events.
As popular as he was, how much did he help raise for a multitude of causes?
"A lot! Because there are hundreds of organisations that Guy supported through golf fundraisers," confirmed Michel Lacroix.
Aside from a few exceptions, he was not playing. But he was always present for what he did so well, which was chatting with people, shaking hands, signing autographs, and taking pictures as he drove around the course in a motorized cart to make sure he did not miss anyone.
The government confirmed a state funeral on May 3, preceded by public viewing on May 1 and 2, at the Bell Centre.
Golf has a great opportunity to honour Guy Lafleur's memory.
Given the impact of the number 10 on our society through golf, why not fly the flags at half-mast on every 10th green in the province this weekend?
The suggestion is made to the associations.
