Jocelyne Bourassa, 2013 Pierre-Nadon Prize

Guest editorial written by Mario Brisebois

The Pierre-Nadon Prize presented to Jocelyne Bourassa

in recognition of her passion for golf

Many athletes chose to prolong their careers by becoming coaches or managers. Jocelyne Bourassa was successful at both. Now that she has explored all aspects of her professional life, the golf icon is now getting involved as a volunteer with the same degree of intensity as always.

In fact, her generous involvement and absolute dedication are the reasons why Jocelyne Bourassa is presented with the Pierre-Nadon Prize this Thursday at Le Mirage during the golf benefit tournament of the Québec Golf Federation.

Pierre Nadon was notorious in the golf industry. More specifically, he was a reporter at La Patrie, Montréal-Matin and La Presse, editior of the Golf Canada magazine, collector, and great golf supporter.

When Pierre left us (much too young) to enjoy heaven’s blue courses, a tribute was created by his fellow reporters, in collaboration with Golf Québec, to commemorate his life and celebrate his constant support of sport expressed through many discreet actions.

Jocelyne Bourassa was honoured often this year as she was celebrating the 40th anniversary of her victory of La Canadienne Trophy on her own turf, here, in Montréal. By the way, no other Canadian talent, including Mike Weir, have matched this achievement.

Today, this is not Jocelyne the champion or Jocelyne the 20-year Director of the du Maurier Classic that is honoured as much as Jocelyne, the passionate individual.

NO INTENTION OF RETIRING

Jocelyne Bourassa is one of those individuals for whom the word retirement doesn’t exist (which is great for the golf industry). While she could shine her trophies and collect awards, Jocelyne still gets involved everywhere, all the time, generously and nicely.

The 1972 LPGA Rookie of the Year never missed a single day (in Montréal or anywhere in the province) of the elite provincial tour that is named after her. Actually, Jocelyne is often the first one to arrive at the course. As a role model, she is fulfilling her duties discreetly and efficiently.

Jocelyne is always there and available: at the Québec Games held in Shawinigan where she grew up, in the Golf in Schools program, supporting hearing impaired children through golf, at the Josée Pérusse Day or Suzanne-Beauregard Commemorative Tournament, in women’s golf clinics conducted in collaboration with Debbie Savoy-Morel, through her attendance at L’Académie du Blainvillier fundraiser or by sending encouragement e-mails to our NCAA hopefuls.

FOLLOWING A 40-YEAR OLD MODEL

We all know the television show “Donnez au suivant”. In fact, “giving back to the next generation” is the daily leitmotiv of our recipient who is also contributing to the cause as a volunteer. For instance, in the month of May, she helped out in the fundraiser organized to support Sara-Maude Juneau in her LPGA rookie year.

Aside from contacting Paul Vaillancourt to get his support, she also picked up the phone and called several of her personal contacts to solicit their donations, including the Fondation Jean-Louis Lévesque that had helped her 40 years ago.

Even if she would prefer that these details are not revealed publicly, she personally reached in her own wallet, more than once, and signed very significant cheques as donations.

No one could say on which course the eternal Pierre Nadon is playing today. However, one thing is sure. He would be delighted and thrilled to see Jocelyne Bourassa as one of the recipients of this Homage to his life and contribution.
