André Maltais, 2021 Pierre-Nadon Prize

The Pierre-Nadon Prize is also a celebration of André Maltais' outstanding career

An end-of-year tradition for the past fifteen years, the Pierre-Nadon Prize has become a double event this year.

The unanimous selection of André Maltais by a group of golf journalists is also an opportunity to celebrate a truly exceptional career.

A friendly and popular character, our laureate has a rich history which begun in East Angus, in the Eastern Townships, as a young caddie at 11 years of age in 1953. With time, he eventually spent fifteen years as a golf professional at Club Laval-sur-le Lac club from 1971 to 1986, in addition to acting as the right-hand man of Jules Huot for five years.

A true globetrotter

But there is much more to his resume than that.

Between 1987 and 2000 he was the owner of the Waterville club.

One of his great achievements was to maintain his high level of play despite his responsibilities with two Canadian Open appearances in 1969 and 1971.

He was the 1967 Assistant Pro Champion and the 1959 Junior Finalist.

He was director, captain, and president of the PGA of Québec in 1981-82.

He was a teacher in Hawaii and a golf superintendent in Antigua. A complete list of his accomplishments follows at the bottom of this text.

André was an excellent teacher, René Noël, Guy Faucher, Raymond Richer and Serge Thivierge having been his students.

Because the apple falls close to the tree, his son Eric is pro-teacher emeritus at the Île de Montréal golf club, as was his other son, Patrick, at Golf Dorval before he passed away.

Supporting Adrien Bigras

What is most admirable is that 70 years later, André Maltais is still serving his sport.

These days, he is adding to the Adrien Bigras file to right a wrong done to his friend in the Canadian PGA Hall of Fame.

Bravo to André Maltais for keeping the passion alive and thank you for your continued involvement.

Editor's note: Pierre Nadon was a golf columnist and the award in his name is sanctioned by Golf Québec.
