History Timeline

Québec, the Cradle of Golf in North America
Some people were already playing golf at Victoria Square on Christmas Day in 1826. The Plains of Abraham hosted the first rounds of golf in the Capitale-Nationale region in 1854. The first club in North America, the Montreal Golf Club, was founded in 1873 and was granted permission by Queen Victoria to add the prefix “Royal” to its name in 1884. The Murray Bay Golf Club, incorporated in 1894, welcomed its first golfers in 1876. It is the oldest 18-hole course still in the same location in America.

Background
The organization now known as the Québec Golf Federation (“Golf Québec”) was officially founded in 1920 when the Montreal District Golf Association amended its charter to adopt the name Golf Association of the Province of Québec.

History Timeline

1920 - 1999

  • 1920 | Foundation of the Québec Golf Association (QGA)

In Québec, the organization that would become the federation known as Golf Québec was founded on April 5, 1920. It was then named the Province of Quebec Golf Association (PQGA), and its creation enabled clubs in the Montréal, Québec City, and Ottawa regions to take advantage of golf governance and development services. Its founding clubs were the Country Club of Montréal, Beaconsfield, Kanawaki, Laval-sur-le-Lac, Outremont, Royal Montréal, and Whitlock.

  • 1921 | Foundation of the Canadian Ladies Golf Association (CLGA)

On the women's side, the Canadian Ladies Golf Association held its first annual meeting on September 23, 1920, in Hamilton. It was then that the first discussions took place on the formation of a provincial branch with the CLGU - Québec Branch, which was created on April 13, 1921, under the leadership of Montrealer Miss Beverly Robinson. From that moment on, women's clubs in the province could stand on their own two feet instead of depending on a national committee.

  • 1996 | Creation of the Québec Golf Hall of Fame

The Québec Golf Hall of Fame was conceived by three past presidents of the Québec Golf Association (QGA), Mr. Larry Boyle, Maurice Dagenais and Roger Legault. Their desire was to pay homage to the many great Québec players and builders who have distinguished themselves provincially, nationally or internationally, and of which 10 were inducted during the inaugural ceremony of 1996.

  • 1999 | Foundation of the Fédération québécoise de golf (FQG)

The first Fédération québécoise de golf (FQG) was founded in 1999, under the presidency of Jean Trudeau, who was the Executive Director of the Association des golfeurs professionnels du Québec (AGP) and whose professional teaching members had the necessary certifications to work in recognized Sport-études golf programs. To meet its status as a federation, the new organization was governed by a board composed of representatives from the AGP of Québec, the QGA, and the CLGA – Québec Branch.

2000 - 2014

  • 2005 | Amalgamation Between the Men’s and Women’s Associations

After 92 years of separation at the national level, the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA), which oversees men's amateur golf, and the Canadian Ladies Golf Association (CLGA) reunited in 2005.

In the same spirit, at the provincial level, on March 4, 2005, the members of the Québec Golf Association (QGA) were called to vote, and on March 7, 2005, the members of the CLGA - Québec Branch did the same. Both votes were unanimously in favour of creating a new corporation to be known as the Québec Golf Association.

The new association, which came into being on April 5, 2025, will henceforth be known under the trade name Golf Québec.

  • 2009 | Creation of the Regional Association Council

This is an advisory committee tasked with reviewing key issues relating to strategies and governance that could influence the business relationship between Golf Québec and regional golf associations.

  • 2010 | Golf Québec Unveils a New Brand

In November 2010, Golf Québec’s new image was unveiled on its website and those of its eight regional associations. Inspired by Golf Canada’s new logo, the provincial brand stands out with the famous blue fleur-de-lis on its right side. This new, more standardized image demonstrated that “Together we are shaping golf’s future.”

  • 2011 | Amalgamation and Creation of the Québec Golf Federation

In its 2008-2011 strategic plan, Golf Québec set itself the mission of increasing the efficiency of its structures and restoring harmonious relations with clubs and other industry players. It was with this objective in mind that, on Wednesday, August 31, 2011, the members of Golf Québec met to vote on the proposed merger between the Québec Golf Association (QGA) and the Fédération québécoise de golf (FQG).

The assembly voted unanimously in favour of the merger. As of December 1, 2011, the legal name of Golf Québec became the Québec Golf Federation, as we know it today.

  • 2014 | Sport Federation of the Year

Golf Québec was named Sport Federation of the Year by Sports-Québec at the 41st edition of the Gala Sports-Québec.

  • 2023 | Launch of the Québec Team

Launch of the Québec team as part of our player development process, which takes us from the local, to the regional, and to the provincial level, ultimately bringing our athletes to the national level. The Québec team program focuses on the provincial level and targets competitive athletes in the Élite, Relève, and Espoir categories. Services are being decentralized, in the sense that we will go to the athletes in their own environment rather than forcing them to uproot themselves to obtain services, and we will work in collaboration with their personal coaches.

  • 2025 | Launch of New Programs

Élan féminin – Golf for her: A recreational initiative aimed at women and girls across Québec. The goal of this project is to introduce participants to a world that is still too little known and to show that golf is an accessible, exciting, and rewarding sport for all ages.

Junior Skills Tour: A tour designed to enhance the technical skills of young golfers aged 14 and under. It focuses on the three fundamental elements of golf: driving, chipping, and putting.

Sortez, golfez: The year 2025 marked a turning point for the Sortez, golfez campaign with the introduction of a brand new concept: the Sortez, golfez tour.
